Higher Education - Coastal College

A new build facility at a costal college’s campus to provide learning facilities for students with addition needs, to foster independent living. With a BREEAM Excellent rating targeted as part of the funding received, low carbon technologies were employed to keep energy consumption to a minimum whilst delivering appropriate internal conditions for the students.
A combination of natural ventilation and mechanically assisted natural ventilation systems were used in the main double height atrium space and classrooms, providing sufficient air changes to maintain optimum indoor air quality year round.
The simple but effective lighting design made use of PIRs to limit energy use for areas that were seldom occupied, such as WC’s and storage areas, and daylight diming to turn off perimeter lighting when external light levels were sufficient.
The completed project delivered a visually impressive, highly functional BREEAM building.
